Trying to find scholarships for any degree is overwhelming, however Finding Art Scholarships seem to be a little harder. Here are a few tips to finding the best art scholarship fit for your child!

Is your child looking for a degree in Art? My daughter is majoring in Art and let me tell you, I had to look a little harder for scholarships for her then if she was to go into a STEM field. A female in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field usually has ample opportunities to find scholarships as the colleges are really pushing those fields for women.
Art is usually a different story. However, with a little digging, you can find some art scholarships for your artist. It just takes a little longer to find. Here are a few ways to look for art scholarships.
Look locally
Be sure to check your local 4H, county extension office, any art shows or art fairs in your area. County fairs sometimes have art shows and give out prizes.
One nationwide contest that starts locally is the VWF Young American Creative Art Contest. My daughter entered this one. First you send it in to a local VFW Auxiliary and they will choose which piece to sponsor. If you are the only one who sends in a picture, then they will sponsor you. Then, the VFW will send it to your state for judging. If the artwork wins first place in your state, it will be sent on to the nationwide contest for judging. You can see the 2024 winners on the VWF website. Take special note of 11th place. My daughter won $100 from our local VFW, $500 from our state and another $500 from the nationwide contest. $1100 in all! Here is the form to fill out if you are interested in the art contest.
Art scholarships at the college
Look carefully at the websites of the colleges you are interested in. In addition to sport scholarships, we have found most have art scholarships as well. More than likely you will be required to submit examples of your artwork so make sure you have digital copies of your favorite and best work. We had to submit as little as 7 and as much as 15 pieces. A variety of mediums is best.
Also, when you visit the school, be sure to ask about the scholarships they offer and have a few pieces of work on your phone to show them if they ask. It is always good to come prepared.

Search on the internet
Start your search for art scholarships on the world wide web. Sometimes, the most random scholarships can be found after searching the internet for them. (Including ones for art.) These scholarships range from Doodle For Google to Duct Tape dresses! By the way, Scholarships.com is an excellent resource for finding quality scholarships of all kinds and awards.
Check your high school
As always, your child's guidance counselor is a great source of information. Always check with them as to what information they have. Also, have your child check with their high school art teacher. They may have connections throughout the area with local artists or companies.

Finding art scholarships can be a little tough. However, it is possible to find some with a little digging and determination. Be sure to look around and when you find something, apply, apply, apply! You never know what your child can get!
